Looking For Perks!

We have already explored the idea of your work paying for some or all of tuition costs through various programs.  There are other jobs out there that can help you reduce costs in other aspects of college life.  If you can’t find a job that will pay your tuition or housing costs then maybe you can find a job with other perks.

Many part-time jobs come with some great perks these days.  For instance I used to work at a small regional airline (not as a flight attendant, but as one of those ticket takers). One of the perks of my job was free travel to anywhere in the United States and dramatically reduced travel to foreign countries (I only had to pay taxes and tariffs).  These flights were on a standby basis, but by the time you worked for the company long enough to earn flight privileges you knew which flights were often empty. These benefits were offered to both full and part-time employees.  If you worked there long enough you could even earn passes for friends to go with you.  Family was often automatically included in the benefits package (so if you’re married and have kids the whole family can go).

Working at a campus book store is also a great opportunity.  Sometimes the discount is significant enough that it beats out online textbook retailers and renters. Plus these stores usually hire mostly students and will be flexible with your school schedule.  The same goes working at one of the dining halls or on campus restaurants.  I had a friend that never bought groceries or food because their job benefit was free meals.  Not all dining halls or restaurants will be as generous, but even one meal a day is significant savings.

Try to take notice of your needs and ask yourself if there is a job out there that provides a service in that area.  If so apply to positions in companies that offer these services.
